The Division

We are a trusted partner to our clients, within Customer Strategy and Technology, developing and delivering smart, integrated and sustainable data and analytics solutions which enable evidence-driven decisions to benefit our customers and communities, and leading an uplift in data literacy of use of data insights across the cluster.


The opportunity

Right now, we have an exciting opportunity for a Data Modeller to join us in Data Engineering & Architecture team. It is responsible for developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models for databases and data warehouses, and ensure high data quality and less redundancy while also working with data architects and analyse business requirements, implement data strategies as well as optimise, and update data models.

The role requires strong business stakeholder management ability to ensure stability of the AAI team through its growth.

What you will be involved in but not limited to:

  • Create, optimise, update, and maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models in various RDBMS, NoSQL and Data Lake environments.
  • Analysing and translating the data modelling needs of the branch in terms of Business Intelligence, Analytics and Data Science use cases to understand how teams are leveraging the data models to derive business and customer insights.
  • Evaluating data systems for their veracity, variety, value, velocity and volume to apply the most correct data modelling technique appropriate to the source and its application.
  • Work collaboratively in a diverse team environment, including data architects and developers as well as understanding and translating business needs into high-level conceptual data models, data strategies and data flows as required.
  • Effectively collaborate with database administrators in creating physical data schema from the logical and physical data models by making recommendations, designing referential integrity, and ensuring compliance with business requirements.
  • Design and develop data mapping, code and transformation scripts to support and promote Data Lake / Data Warehouse / RDBMS deliverables as well as design effective ELT logic and code as required.
  • Define and govern data modelling and design standards, tools, best practices and related development methodologies as required as well as utilising data modelling tools and associated graphical methods to depict and analyse conceptual, logical and physical data schemas.
  • Evaluate data models, business data objects and physical databases and troubleshooting or resolving related issues as well as making recommendations for proper usage or re-use of data models in different environments.

About you:

  • Working with in big data environments with genuine big data challenges and effectively managing the technical trade-offs between Data Lake, OLAP, OLTP with an understanding of scalability, supportability and performance challenges.
  • Experience with modelling data for RDBMS using tools such as ERWIN data modeler or Sparx Enterprise Architect or Lean IX.
  • Exposure in reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts.
  • Deep understanding of AWS S3 Data Lake, Data Warehouse and experience in working with dynamic geospatial data and linear asset management systems.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and management skills.
  • Ability to influence and quickly build relationships.
  • Working knowledge of Python and other cloud first scripting languages for the purposes of automation and process scheduling is a big bonus.

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is TfNSW Grade 8 ($118,015 - $132,176) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
